Let me tell you first what is Wat Phnom and the legend behind…
It is a small hill crowned by an active wat (pagoda) marks the legendary founding place of the Phnom Pehn. The hill is the site of constant activity with steady stream of the faithful trekking to the vihear, shrines and fortune tellers on top and a constellation og vendors, visitors and motodups at the bottom. Elephant rides are available. The legend of the founding of Wat Phnom is tied to the beginning of Phnom Pehn. Legend has it that in 1372 Lady Pehn (Yea Pehn) finished a floating Koki tree out of the river. Inside the tree were four Buddha statues. She built a hill (“phnom” means “hill”) and a small teple (wat) at what is now the site known as Wat Phnom. Later, the surrpunding area became known after the hill (Phnom) and its creator (Pehn), hence the name of the city “Phnom Pehn.” The current temple was last rebuilt in 1926. The large stupa contains the remains of King Ponhea Yat (1405-1467) who moved the Khmer capital from Angkor to Phnom Pehn in 1422. Look for the altar of Lady Pehn between the large stupa and vihear. She is said to be of particular help to women.
I had fun and got to do and listen with what the fortune teller will say and guess what, everyone who hears what he said says that it was great though I don’t understand it at all because it is in Khmer but Usa translated it for me in English, thanks God, she’s an angel… *smile* Well, the fortune teller just said that I will get whatever I wish for, hmm, sounds great, isn’t it?! Oppsss…monkeys are every where plus got to see an elephant which I only see at zoo back in Manila…hehehe! Entrance fee cost $1.00 for foreigner like me. I also did pray for Lady Pehn and wish for something—well, will keep it for myself! I love to see them doing their rituals when praying. I somehow follow and it feels great. What else, all-in-all my visit with Wat Phnom was just so great, I just wish that K was with me—grrr, he is at work and super busy with his report then so I got to go with bunch of friends that I met here in Phnom Pehn…they are all amzing and so kind to give me some of their precious time…thanks guys, Usa, Soukha and Kin Houng!
