Few months ago, K brought home various books for me to read and its only now that I started reading those books…one by one, chapter by chapter…hope I can finish it all!

Now, I am reading Raising Boys (3rd Edition) by Steve Biddulph…I have one and he is 8 years old now, not too late to read…the book is for everyone, whether your son is a tiny baby, a young schoolboy like mine, or a teenager surging with hormones and hopes…

I am now done with few chapters and would like to share these following points from the book in raising boys:

* In the years between birth and six, boys need lots of affection so they can “learn to love.” Talking and teaching one-to-one helps them connect to the world. The mother is usually the best person to provide this, although a father can take this part.

* At about six, boys how a strong interest in maleness, and the father becomes the primary parent. His interest and time become critical. The mother’s part remains important, however: she shouldn’t ‘back off’ from her son just because he is older.

*From about fourteen years of age, boy need mentors—other aduts who care about them personally and who help them move gradually into the larger world. Old societies provided initiation to mark this stage, and mentors were much more available.

*Single mothers can raise boys well, but must search carefully for good, safe, male role models and must devote some tme to self-care (since they are doing the work of two).

From birth to six, it is the gentle years. From six to fourteen, they are learning to be male. While, fourteen and onwards, they discovering how to become a man!

I am now heading to read chapters about testorerone, how boys’ and girls’ brains differ, what dads can do, mothers and son, developing an healthy sexuality, a revolution in schooling, boys and sport, and a community challenge…well, I hope I will learn more! :)

Its a good read…and I am so looking forward finishing it and start, Raising Girls…
